Our Cause- Running to Eradicate Cancer

The Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) has been selected as the Salt Lake City Marathon's charity.
Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah is the premiere cancer research and care facility in the Intermountain West. As a National Cancer Institute-designated clinical care facility, HCI doctors and scientists conduct cutting-edge genetics research and treat patients in a caring environment.

A 50-bed Huntsman Cancer Hospital, adjacent to the Institute labs and clinics, opened in June 2004, HCI is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network - a 19-member alliance of the world's leading cancer institutes in the US.
The HCI Mission is to understand cancer from it's beginnings, to use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and to educate the public about cancer risk, prevention and care.

Join the Hometown Heroes
Hometown Heroes is a fundraising event to benefit the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Participants train for running, walking and cycling endurance events and fundraise much-needed money to support the mission of Huntsman Cancer Institute. Staff, coaches, fellow participants, and honored patients support committed participants in meeting both their physical and financial goals.
Each Hometown Heroes participant commits to raising a pre-determined amount of money for participating in this event. HCI’s Hometown Heroes program promises to spend no more than 25 percent of the money raised on expenses. The remaining 75 percent of the funds raised will benefit HCIs mission.
The Hometown Heroes program:
- Rewards you with fun training gear and team apparel
- Connects your team with running/walking coaches & fundraising help
- Registers you for the run or walk
- Provides you with VIP treatment on training runs and at the finish
- Puts the funds you raise to work immediately in cancer research
Participants commit to the following:
- Pay a non-refundable processing fee ($10 for the 5k, $25 for Marathon, Half-Marathon & Bike Tour)

2007 Salt Lake City Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K Recap
On April 21, 2007, 250 people who participated in the Hometown Heroes program ran, walked or biked in the Salt Lake City Marathon, Half Marathon 5K and Bike Tour to benefit HCI. Before the race even began, these heroes raised over $220,000 to further HCI's mission of research, education, and patient care. In addition, Devine Racing, the event organizers, donated a portion of the entry fees from the marathon, half marathon and 5K to HCI. HCI organized a force of over 1,100 volunteers who provided behind-the-scenes help with the race from start to finish; their assistance was essential to the race's success. Congratulations and thanks to all who participated in Hometown Heroes and the race.
